You may already know that nearly all sweepstakes, rebates and skill contests require prize fulfillment, but keep the following five points in mind when conducting your next promotion:
- Budget: Be certain to take the cost of fulfilling prizes into account when establishing a prize structure. The size and weight of prizes, along with the quantity and retail value, can significantly affect your overall budget.
- Choices, Choices: Do you want to offer winners the opportunity to choose from among hundreds of e-gift cards, or prefer to send a traditional branded prepaid gift card? If you’re offering a tangible item, do you send it in a customized or standard mailer? How about including a note with each prize?
- Crunch-time Travel is a PITA! Vacations and unique experiences – think professional sports league playoff games, concerts and luxurious cruises – can be motivating prizes for appropriate target audiences. Since it’s typically unknown where playoff games will be played (exceptions include the Super Bowl, golf and tennis events, etc.), airfare and hotel need to be booked last minute, increasing travel coordination, cost and complexity.
- “Oh, we can do it”: Some companies believe they have the ability to fulfill promotion prizes. However, travel coordination for a winner and guest requires a significant level of time and expertise. Coordinating, kitting and shipping even a handful of prizes consume an unexpected amount of resources.
- Beware the unhappy winners! Slow prize fulfillment – coupled with a lack of communication – lead to disgruntled winners who often use social media to voice their displeasure, resulting in a loss of hard-earned goodwill with the target audience.
